Saturday morning, Evan arrived with the boys and his daughter, who’d begged to come along. For days, all he’d heard was how nice Mesa was, as if he’d needed the reminders about the woman who was not only kind and caring but who’d stolen a piece of his heart. His daughter’s too, apparently.
The truth of that conflicted him no end. Mesa was good for him, but was she the safest bet for Ava?
Yet, here he was, on her doorstep, with his daughter, both of them thrilled at any excuse to see their favorite cowgirl.
“We’re working in the barn today.” He stood inside the doorway of Mesa’s house, hat in hand. “Ava can hang out with us, if you’re busy. Some of the church kids are here to help, too. They’re great with her.”
“I’m never too busy for my favorite Ava.” She smiled at his child. Ava silently clapped her hands and cheered.
Evan’s pulse tumbled, picked up again, and pounded hard.
His child and the woman he was falling for, a scary team. A gorgeous pair.
A troubling conflict.
“I want to talk to you about something first,” Mesa said. And then to Ava. “Ava, sweetie, would you please take your coat down the hall and hang it in the closet?”
“Okay.”
As soon as Ava was out of earshot, Mesa motioned him into the kitchen. “I don’t want her to overhear.”
“I gathered as much. What’s up?” He leaned a shoulder against the doorframe, relaxed and easy in her company, happy to hear her voice and to look into those stunning green eyes.
He wasn’t falling. He’d already hit the ground.
He sighed, smiling a little as he waited to hear what she had to say.
“I hope you don’t take this wrong.”
Her foreboding words took the shine off his euphoria. Wary now, he straightened. “What’s this about?”
“Ava.” She cast a glance toward the living room and then back to him. “She told me the doctors say she can be a normal kid within reason. Is that true?”
“Yes. And I’m the one who decides what’s normal.”
“Normal kids run and ride horses and dance.” Her words were gentle, caring even, but they annoyed Evan.
He gripped the brim of his hat tight enough to cause a wrinkle. “You don’t know what we’ve been through. You don’t know what it means to have a child so fragile that you tiptoe into her room every night to make sure she’s still breathing. She’s my life. My heart and soul. My responsibility. If anything should happen to her—”
“God went to all the trouble to give her a new heart. Don’t you think He plans to look out for her?”
“I think He gave me that job.”
“I can’t argue that, but there’s such a thing as over-doing. Maybe you could lighten up a little. Not control her every move.”
“Is that what you think? That I’m over-controlling? You. The queen of risk-taking?”
She shrunk back, her light dimming, but she wasn’t one to back down.
“If there is one thing I’ve learned, Evan,” she said gently, “it’s that fear doesn’t stop bad things from happening.
